Data handling: Calculate, represent and interpret measures of central tendency and dispersion in univariate numerical ungrouped data

Subject outcome

Subject outcome 4.1: Calculate, represent and interpret measures of central tendency and dispersion in univariate numerical ungrouped data.

Learning outcomes

  • Work out the five-number summary by:
    • Calculating the maximum, minimum and quartiles
    • Determining the fences
    • Constructing the box and whisker diagram
    • Indicating any outliers.
  • Interpret the meaning of the representation of the box and whisker diagram with its outliers.

Unit 1 outcomes

By the end of this unit you will be able to:

  • Find the mean for ungrouped data.
  • Find the median for ungrouped data.
  • Find the mode for ungrouped data.
  • Find the range and interquartile range.

Unit 2 outcomes

By the end of this unit you will be able to:

  • Combine measures of central tendency and dispersion to work out the five-number summary.
  • Construct the box-and-whisker plot.
  • Interpret the box-and-whisker plot.
